Saturday at the beautiful Chandler Center For The Arts, Chompie’s participated to sponsor the fundraiser for the new Holocaust Museum that is to be built in Chandler just south of the East Valley JCC on Alma School between Ray & Chandler Blvd. It was an amazing evening that began with an account of the life as expressed in person by holocaust survivor, Helen Handler. My words cannot express her ability to capture the audience. We were riveted, and “you could hear a pin drop”..tears, laughter, tears again. Following Helen, the Mayor of Chandler spoke about the city’s excitement to build the 6th national Holocaust & Tolerance Museum , “right here in Chandler”. He is ecstatic about the new shopping, hotels & revitalization of the area that expects to bring in many tourists, etc., stating, “The new museum will be a destination & attraction for the city!” Steve Tepper, the EVJCC Director then spoke about the new Museum & the JCC’s partnership with the city. He gave a most gracious & heartfelt thank you to Chompie’s & the Borenstein family for sponsoring the dessert reception, saying to the audience of approximately 500+, “You’ll all be very happy when you get to eat some of the best desserts in this world served tonite by Chompie’s”. City dignitaries were present. Following Mr. Tepper, we saw a most moving story on the big screen, “Rene’ & I”… a true story about twins (brother & sister) reunited after the holocaust, having survived the most horrific experiments done to them from age 6 on (& others) in the Auschwitz concentration camp by Dr. Josef Mengele. The story tells of how the twins were separated & then AMAZINGLY reunited & how they overcame to create a life in America. It was a “WOW”… so sad…so beautiful & what an ending!!!!
Teaching Tolerance is the goal of the city of Chandler, the JCC & for us all.
