According to elementary school age kids, bullying occurs most often during recess. Teachers and principals explain that the transition from recess to classroom teaching time is often the most difficult and wasted time portion of each day. That’s why Chompie’s, Arizona’s New York Deli, through its “Chompie’s Cares” program, has teamed up with the nonprofit Playworks Arizona to put an end to bullying and increase teaching time in area schools.

Chompie’s and Playworks collaborated to make a new kids menu for Chompie’s that helps teach kids how to solve conflicts and promote inclusion within schools and on the recess yard. Chompie’s is making a donation to Playworks for every kids meal purchased from the new kids menu to help schools run much needed programs that teach kids to be inclusive and boost self-confidence.

The new interactive and educational kids menu at Chompie’s offers 19 different breakfast, lunch and dinner kids meals and introduces a new gluten-free friendly section with menu items such as waffles, macaroni and cheese and flatbread cheese pizza. The regular kids meals include all-time favorites like chicken fingers, French toast and cheeseburgers, plus a selection of sliders. The new menu also includes fun interactive learning games that teach sharing, inclusion and conflict resolution.

Introducing Our New “Gen-S” Smoked Fish Menu

Introducing our new and improved smoked fish menu featuring authentic Norwegian Smoked Fish selections that will excite and satisfy the new generation of fish loving foodies as well as long-time smoked fish loyalists.

Smoked fish has long been a Jewish tradition as well as a tradition at Chompie’s. In ancient times, when kosher meat was not always available, fish was an important staple of the Jewish diet.

“For over 34 years, Chompie’s has always strived to provide the freshest, most enjoyable, and most authentic experience and food possible, while keeping up with the times, which is why we are introducing the new smoked fish menu,” said Neal Borenstein, Executive Vice President and owner of Chompie’s.

We have branded our entire new line-up of smoked fish “Gen-S”–the next generation of smoked fish in terms of selection (wider variety and new tastes), superior quality and sustainability, appealing to Gen-Xers and Gen-Yers hungry for modern twists on traditional deli offerings with expectations beyond those of the generations before them. Simply put, Chompie’s Gen-S ain’t your grandma’s smoked fish; in fact, it knocks it out of the water.

The new smoked fish selections found both on our dining menu and in our fresh deli case include:

• Nova Lox: The grand-daddy of them all, this traditionally smoked Norwegian salmon has the perfect balance of flavors. It’s good with just about anything!

• Pastrami Smoked Salmon: Traditionally smoked Norwegian salmon with pastrami seasoning, making for an irresistibly sweet and tangy flavor.

• Gravlox: An old world style of smoked Norwegian salmon that is also brined and seasoned with a traditional dill and pepper blend.
WHY: Saint Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people.

For over 1,000 years, the Irish have celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th, the anniversary of his death. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast–on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

 Irish soda bread gets its name and distinctive character from the use of baking soda rather than yeast as a leavening agent.

Irish immigrants living on New York City’s Lower East Side substituted corned beef for their traditional dish of Irish bacon to save money. The Borensteins, owners of Chompie’s, who are from New York, continue the time-honored tradition of serving corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day.

FACTS:

 Corned beef and cabbage is a traditional St. Patrick’s Day dish. In 2009, roughly 26.1 billion pounds of beef and 2.3 billion pounds of cabbage were produced in the United States.

 Irish soda bread gets its name and distinctive character from the use of baking soda rather than yeast as a leavening agent.

 Lime green chrysanthemums are often requested for St. Patrick’s Day parades and celebrations. There are 34.7 million U.S. residents with Irish ancestry. This number is more than seven times the population of Ireland itself.

 Irish is the nation’s second most frequently reported ancestry, ranking behind German.

 Across the country, 11 percent of residents lay claim to Irish ancestry. That number more than doubles to 23 percent in the state of Massachusetts.

 Irish is the most common ancestry in 54 U.S. counties, of which 44 are in the Northeast.

 Irish ranks among the top five ancestries in every state except Hawaii and New Mexico. It is the leading ancestry group in Delaware, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

 There are approximately 144,588 current U.S. residents who were born in Ireland.
